After the first day of December, there is only one team in the Cascade Conference on the women’s side undefeated, Eastern Oregon University. Eastern defeated a feisty Oregon Tech, 73-66, Saturday night in La Grande.
The Mountaineers (5-0) (2-0) were picked to finish first in the conference preseason poll, and currently sit at the top alone after the first weekend of conference play.
It was the second close game in consecutive nights for EOU after slipping past Southern Oregon in overtime by three on Friday night. The Mountaineers and OIT changed leads five times and were tied nine times during the game.
Eastern shot 52 percent from the field in the victory, and controlled the ball very well only giving up ten turnovers compared to Friday night’s 25 turnovers. The Mountaineers also outscored OIT in the paint 36-22.
Eastern was led by Sheena Henderson who just missed another double-double finishing with 23 points and eight rebounds. Laura Olsen and Tiffanie Ulmer added 22 and 12 points respectively for the Mounties.
The Hustlin’ Owls had three players in double-digits in scoring, led by Crystal Idrogo’s 23 points. Jenna Ball added 14 points, while grabbing eight rebounds and Cora McVey also had 13 points.
“This was a big weekend for us. I’m really proud of our girls; they worked and fought hard in two close games. I think it really showed our character,” said Eastern head coach Anji Weisenfluh on the victory.
Eastern sits three spots out of the preseason NAIA top 25, with the first regular season poll to be released Wednesday, December 5.
The Mountaineers will travel to NCAA division three, Linfield College (4-0), December 8 for their next game.
