Let the coaching carousel begin, the season is coming to an end and many coaches are finding their jobs coming to an end. Lloyd Carr at Michigan, Houston Nutt at Arkansas, Dennis Franchione at Texas A&M, and Chan Gailey at Georgia Tech all had winning season and will be going to a bowl game; with new head coaches.
Karl Dorrell at UCLA and Charlie Weis at Notre Dame will be next. Weis most certainly deserves to be the next out because if Tyrone Willingham was fired after posting a better record in the same amount of time, wouldn’t you think he should get the same consequence?
Who would have thought Missouri would be the top-ranked college football team in the country at the beginning of the year? Well no voters in the Associated Press preseason top 25 poll. Missouri was not even in the top 25 in the preseason poll and now sit one game away from the national championships at the current number one spot. The Tigers one loss on the season was to Oklahoma. Who stands in the way from Missouri and the national championships? Well, the Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday in the Big 12 Championships.
If Missouri loses to Oklahoma and second-ranked West Virginia loses to Pittsburgh, combined with a Georgia win this weekend, we could have a two-loss team in the national championships! A team that started 3-2 and lost to unranked South Carolina and Tennessee could be the national champion.
What’s even odder than that? We may have an undefeated NFL champion at the end of the season whose coach was caught cheating earlier in the season. Don’t get me wrong the Patriots are an incredible team, but I can’t help but think how many eyes Belichick has watching the other team’s coaches?
An undefeated record has only happened once in NFL history the 1972 Miami Dolphins, while the Dolphins would love to see the Patriots lose this season to hold that coveted record; the current Miami team has yet to win a game this season. The Dolphins found another way to lose Monday night, falling to the Steelers 3-0. Three points is all two professional football teams could score after sixty minutes. Miami has now lost six of their 11 games by three points.
I’ll close this week with another sad and tragic story out of Miami. Washington Redskins safety was shot and killed at his Florida home on Monday. The 24-year-old pro-bowler was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery, damaging an artery and causing significant blood loss. This was the second murder of an NFL player this season after Denver Broncos defensive back, Darrent Williams was shot during a drive-by in September.
