CALDWELL, Idaho- The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball suffered its first loss of the season to Westminster of Salt Lake City, 88-71.
Game one of the 21st annual Duane Wolfe Memorial Golden Rule Shoot-out was plagued by fouls, 23 called against Eastern and 24 against the Griffins. Westminster made 25 of their 30 free throws; compared to EOU’s 18 for 24 free throws.
The NAIA division one, Westminster Griffins, came into the game riding a two-game win streak and one-spot out the top 25. Eastern Oregon University Head coach Ryan Looney said after the game, “We just got outplayed. Westminster dominated at every facet of the game.”
EOU (5-1) shot a dismal nine percent from the perimeter, making only one of their eleven three-point field goals. Westminster (4-1) made 12 of their 18 second half shots.
Hermiston’s Mark Carollo led the Mountaineers with 19 points, while Paul Carollo had his second double-double of the season with 12 points and ten rebounds. Kyle Janke came off the bench to add 17 points for Eastern.
Westminster's Danny Stosich had a game-high 23 points. 13 of his points came from the free-throw line. Blair Prowse added 19 points shooting five for six behind the arc, while Nate Sanchez and Danny Reeder each scored 17 points.
The Griffins shot an impressive 61 percent from the field for the game, while EOU shot 41 percent; below their 51 percent average on the season. Eastern also came into the game averaging 42 percent from behind the arc.
The Mountaineers will have to dust themselves off quickly, as the Shoot-Out continues tonight. EOU will face Willamette University (1-0), who used a 23-1 second-half run to outlast the host, College of Idaho (2-3), 72-63.
In last year’s meeting, the Bearcats edged Eastern 84-81 in this tournament. “We won’t change anything going into tonight’s game, other than obviously trying to play much better,” said Looney.
Tonight’s game three tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm, followed by Westminster against the College of Idaho in game four at 8 pm.
