The poor penny… No one cares about the penny anymore. Think about how many pennies are left helpless on the ground. I have seen over and over people just knowingly drop them and make no effort to pick them up. Is this not littering? Copper is down at the moment. Let's remember this, 100,000 pennies equals 1,000 crisp one dollar bills.
Quite a big weekend coming up for the Mountaineers, but before we get to that let's recap last weekend's events. The headline event was the top 25 battle between the EOU men's and Warner Pacific. The game featured the conference's first-place and third-place teams. The game was also a rematch of last year's conference tournament championships.
The Eastern men looked head-and-shoulders above the former conference champion, leading for almost the whole game and winning by eleven, 102-91. The Knights defeated the Mountaineers three times last season, and it seems Eastern has not forgot. EOU has dominated both regular season games versus WP this season.
After an easy victory over Cascade Saturday night, and an Evergreen State College upset over Oregon Tech Friday night, the Mountaineer men sit alone in first-place in the conference and return to the top ten after moving up three spots to number ten.
The Eastern women showcased their talent with another weekend split. EOU had a slow first half with Warner Pacific but cruised in the second half. The Mounties then prevailed over Cascade and continue to hold a one-game lead over Southern Oregon. Eastern also slid up (or down, because the number is lower) to number 17 in the nation.
With all the news being forwarded to basketball, we must not forget that the other winter sport has begun indoor track and field. Eastern traveled to Nampa, Idaho and competed very well against NCAA division one opponents.
On the Women's side, Alexa Loscutoff tied her lifetime best in the Long Jump before setting a personal record in the Triple Jump. Along with Loscutoff in the Triple Jump, freshman Courtney Schimidig advanced to the finals in the event. La Grande native Melisa Abesa broke EOU's school record in the 60 meters in her first collegiate race when the freshman ran a 8.30 to win her heat.
The Men were paced by the record setting performance to Chris Hoppie. Hoppie just missed the NAIA National qualifying mark when he ran a school record 8.40 in the 60 meter hurdles. In the throws, Mitch Wheelhouse barely missed the NAIA provisional qualifying mark in the 35 pound weight throw.
EOU will travel back to Nampa next weekend for the Boise State United Heritage Meet.
What's up with these reality TV shows? Let's use "Rock of Love" for our example. This is the show where former rocker Bret Michaels tries to find his ONE and only, as he chooses among 20 women. My issue is not with the show, although I could have many issues on it, but how can VH1 bring back "Rock of Love" for a second season? How is there a "Rock of Love 2" this year? Shouldn't Bret Michaels have found his true love the first season? Why give him 20 more women? This seems odd because the show is a complete fraud. At the end of the season we can not honestly believe that this is his true love, he just had one last year. This goes for "Flava of Love seasons 1 through 67," and "I Love New York seasons 1-2". At least with every new "The Bachelorette" there is a new woman.
That's enough for now, as always, it's all in good fun, until next week, stay down or MOUNT UP!
