Monday With the Mounties, 1/21/08

January 21, 2008

Town names were often selected in hopes of creating such a pleasant vision that settlers were drawn to the town; for example: Springfield, Seaside, Roseburg, and Lakeview. With this in mind what kind of people do you suppose the founding fathers of Liverpool, England were trying to attract?

That was another great one from father, who agrees with me that the worst name for a location is Summit View Golf Course in Florida.

The Eastern men's basketball team has lived on the edge for the past few weeks. The last five games for the Eastern men have been decided by a total of nine points, resulting in three wins for the Mountaineers. They had an I-5 split over the weekend, coming from behind yet again to win over Corban Friday night in the final seconds by two; before falling at Concordia on Saturday.

The EOU men will need to turn things around as they face Warner Pacific this Friday night in La Grande. The Knights enter the game on a five-game winning streak, the current longest win streak in the conference. Warner Pac comes off a victory at Oregon Tech in front of 2,100 fans. Eastern sits tied in first-place with OIT at the halfway point of the conference schedule.

The Mountaineer women suffered their first conference loss at Concordia on Saturday. This was the lone sign of any weakness in the conference schedule so far. Other than the loss, Eastern's women seem to be ahead of any competition in the conference.

EOU currently sits in sole possession of first-place in the Cascade Conference, one-game ahead of Southern Oregon who has won five straight games. The loss shows that the conference's top five teams are very balanced and the parity might be like no other conference in the country. I have felt for the last few seasons that the Cascade Conference has not received the respect and attention it deserved during the regular season.

Eastern will seek to get back in the win-column this weekend hosting Warner Pacific and Cascade, who currently sit tied for seventh in the conference.

The Eastern Oregon track team gets underway this weekend. You may wonder how in barely double-digit temperatures? Well, indoor track and field of course. Head coach Ben Welch and company will travel to Nampa, Idaho for the Blue and Orange Classic. Best of luck to the athletes, the track and field program has been one of the best in the region for quite sometime.

For those who are curious, the Eastern Oregon softball team has been practicing and getting ready for the upcoming season. Missy Wheeler begins her third season as head coach at EOU, the first home game will be an exhibition against Blue Mountain Community College on March 1. The first conference game will be two weeks later, as EOU hosts The College of Idaho on March 15.

Well, I just came back from the movie theatres, I saw Cloverfield. I won't get into how I felt about it (not well), but I will say how much I love sitting directly in front or behind someone who adds detail to every point in the movie. Why give these obvious comments? They do not add anything at all, "Oh, he's in the building." We all see he is in the building, why not whisper? The worst is, "Oh, you are going to love this part, this is where he gets shot!" Thanks, I should have just met you outside and asked how each movie finished.

Also, am I the only one who gets this huge urge to yell some random noise at the beginning of a movie? You know like when the screen and room is completely black, and there's an awkward silence throughout the whole theatre.

That's enough for now, as always, it's all in good fun, until next week, stay down or MOUNT UP!
