Monday With the Mounties, 12/31/07

December 31, 2007

Why are the Dallas Cowboys "America's Team?" Can we please stop referring them as that? Maybe in the days of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin they may have been. But, we're represented by Terrell Owens and Tony Romo? Last I checked, I am American, and I have never liked Dallas. Well, "America's Team" did quite well against Washington in their final game.

Okay, I got that out of my system now. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays. Happy New Year while I'm at it, since it is New Year's Eve. What a year '07 has been... I guess, I'm beginning to just sit back and watch the years click on. The Holidays are those times when we are all pushed together with families, and there is food at every house you visit. Not just food, but a feast. It's that special time where we realize why we don't see these people every half a year. It's all in good fun of course!

Football does unite everyone this time of year. The NFL tries to capitalize on some sort of built-up/ hyped-up playoff race, which is more of a crawl. The picture is pretty much already decided, but I did enjoy cheering for the Giants until the last ten minutes against the Patriots. Who would have thought 62 percent of the country wanted to see perfection end. This time of the year also gives us a chance to see the University of Central Florida's vaunted passing offense rack up 88 yards in the air in a 10-3 barn-burner loss to Mississippi State. I can't talk about the Knights though, the Bulldogs put up an incredible 39 yard total in the air... and won.

In the world of EOU athletics, the Eastern women played very well before falling to number two in NAIA division one, Vanguard of California by eight. The Mountie women rebounded after their first setback with an easy win over NAIA D-1 Holy Names by 31 points. The men's basketball team travel to Eugene on the 4th to face Northwest Christian. They sit at sixth in the country in NAIA division two, but since the last ranking the nation's number three and five have fallen.

Can someone please tell me how the Oregon State basketball team has lost to Alaska-Fairbanks, Tennessee Tech, and Montana State, and those last two at home? What has happened in Corvallis? In an athletic department where the baseball team has one the last two national titles and the football program has finished strong in bowls the last few years, the basketball program gets continually worse.

Let's not try to remember 2007 as the year when the younger Spears got pregnant, or one of Lindsey Lohan's many wise decisions, or O.J. Simpson's Vegas adventure; let's remember it as the year... hmm geez why can I not think of a great feel good story from the past year? Well, we all have our own personal triumphs, remember those. Until next YEAR, stay down or MOUNT UP!
