Well I now have to actually release “Monday with the Mounties” on Monday. I know this is odd to say, but since I’m finding out people actually read this, as a procrastinator it’s very hard for me. I mean I don’t even think its right to release it at 11:58 PM on Monday evenings! All jokes of course, and as always I appreciate every reader of this column and anything I post.
So after that introduction, let’s dive into some Eastern athletics. Mountaineer athletics entered the win column Friday with a soccer win at Great Falls. This was Jessy Watson’s first collegiate coaching victory. Congratulations to Coach Watson and the Mountie soccer team.
Not too long after that EOU volleyball defeated Oregon Tech to record their first victory in impressive fashion, winning three games to one. I will throw in that it may have been tough for fans to notice the performance on the court, when I made my volleyball public announcer career. Again, always just joking, the games were very exciting over the weekend. And, congratulation goes out to Eastern volleyball on their first win.
Don’t get too excited fans; I was only filling in for Jim Tooke (very hard shoes to fill by the way) for two games. But softball season is right around the corner!
EOU football played a very tough game in Dillon, Montana on Saturday, but fell 20-28. The defense did well again forcing turnovers, but the offense struggled again moving the ball. Things only get tougher traveling to perennial power and fourth-ranked Carroll College this weekend. Best of luck to our Mountaineers!
I’d like to show some love for a sport that rarely gets any appreciation, Cross Country. I think a lot of people don’t know, but we have amazing teams here at Eastern; and actually this is nothing new. Coming into the season the EOU women were ranked 16th in the national poll, while the men were 17th.
Over the last weekend Cross Country traveled to Nampa, Idaho for the Northwest Nazarene Invite and the men did extremely well beating 14th ranked Albertson College and Eastern senior Troy Blackburn finished second overall. Only seconds behind in fourth, is where EOU’s Zach Heath would finish. Marcella Bosch led the women and finished ninth overall.
Cross Country will travel to Eagle, Idaho for their next meet on September 22nd, but everyone please come out support the Mountaineers on their only home meet of the season on October 13th. Even if you’re not a huge fan of running, (Myself, I can run for about 20 yards before running out of breath) but this is just a great morning out and the runners love the support.
This week’s random thought, since I didn’t really share one last week, is a little lesson for all the young men out there. On my way to work, I witnessed a truck full of young men yelling non-seneschal things at a young woman who was running. A few things wrong with this, from the male’s stand-point. One, young men, do you think she left the house hoping that she would run into guys yelling derogatory remarks at her? Two, in the history of boys yelling at girls to get their attention, has it ever worked? And three, it’s called a “Twin” cab for a reason; two, maybe three at the most in the backseat of the truck, not five.
Young men, show a little respect to the women out there and you maybe surprised at the reaction you’ll get. No female wants to be harassed on the street by random people. It might be okay if you know her, but use a little common sense. Now, I’m far from someone who knows anything about women (being that I’m 24, and if I knew about women, I wouldn’t be writing on this website; I’d have a million-dollar book deal), but I do know that this stuff can come off rude.
There’s this week’s lesson, maybe this year’s, but I’ll be back next week with more colorful commentary of EOU sports and the world in general. Until next week, stay down or Mount Up!
