The Eastern Oregon University Track and Field team qualified 12 athletes to compete at the NAIA National Meet in Fresno, California.
The meet turned out to be a springboard for the young Mountaineers as they were outlasted by more experienced schools.
The Men, fresh off their tie for first place at the Cascade Conference Championships, sent five members of the team.
Matt Lane, Lucas Ohmes and Chris Hoppie all entered in the Decathlon. Ohmes used a first place performance in the Pole Vault to capture fifth place overall in the ten sport event. Ohmes was honored as an All-American with his top six finish.
Hoppie may have had a chance to win it all in his first national meet, but a no height in the Pole Vault ruined his chances.
Lane just missed a spot in the finals of the 400 meter dash breaking a school record (48.46) in the semifinals.
Other EOU men in the meet were Adam Goulet in the 800 meters, and Adam Miller competing in the 400 meter hurdles.
The women, who finished 2nd at the conference meet, sent seven members.
Kasie Gillespie needed a favorable finish to get into the top six. She ran a 3:26.06 and finished as the 6th best Heptathlete in the country, earning All-America Status.
The women also entered two relay teams in the meet, the 4x100 meter team of Grace Deboodt, Chelsee Harmon, Danielle Reis and Danielle Murphy.
Deboodt, Harmon, Ries and Murphy were entered in the 4X400 meter relay. Deboodt also threw the javelin.
Other Eastern women were Kayla Weissert in the Pole Vault and Marcella Bosch in the 1500 meters.
