After 21 events it all came down to the final event on the men’s side. Eastern Oregon found themselves down by seven points to Concordia University going into the 4x400 meter relay race.
The Mounties needed to win the race and have Concordia finish no higher than sixth to gain a share of the conference champion title, and that's exactly what happened. An EOU win with the Cavaliers finishing in sixth place gave the two teams matching point totals at 180.
The team of Matt Lane, Ryan Brown, Chris Hoppie and Adam Miller won in a time of 3.22.60 while Concordia finished 6th (3.30.77).
The men saw plenty of strong performances on day one, highlighted by wins in several events. Hoppie won both the Long Jump (22' 5") and the 110M High Hurdles (15.10).
Mitch Wheelhouse won the discus in dramatic fashion with a final throw of 149' 6".
The 4x100 meter team of Nathan Schmidt, Lane, Lucas Ohmes and Miller blew away the competition with a time of 42.59. That time provisionally qualifies them for the national meet.
On the women's side the 4x100 team of Danielle Reiss, Kasie Gillespie, Danielle Murphy and Chelsee Harmon also provisionally qualified for the national meet.
Marcella Bosch defended her 1500 meter title, winning the event by almost two full seconds, and she ran a 2.16.85 in her 800 meter victory.
At the end of the meet, Bosch was named the women’s athlete of the meet.
Grace Deboodt came in 3rd place in her first ever 400 meter race and qualified for nationals in the Javelin with a throw of 135' 11".
Erin Ontko had personal bests in three separate areas of the Heptathlon and Kasie Gillespie bounced from sixth to second place in the Long Jump on her final attempt.
Trisha Harshberger was victorious in the Hammer Throw, with a toss of 145' 8".
After their teams dominated the meet, Eastern head coach Ben Welch and Concordia coach Randy Dalzell shared coach of the year honors for the men. Dalzell also took home the award for the women.
The Cascade Conference Track and Field Championship Meet saw plenty of great weather and even better performances.
