4/15/07: An Odd Win

April 15, 2007

It’s not a trend in softball that if you only get three hits you also get a W in the win column. But, that’s exactly what the Eastern Oregon softball team did in game one against Corban College.
Following a win at Southern Oregon and two dominating performances at Walla Walla College, EOU extended their win streak to four. The Mountaineers scored four runs on only three hits and received some help from sloppy fielding by Corban in a game one win, 4-1.
In game two, Corban seemed to shake off the long trip and did not look like the sixth out of seventh place team in the Cascade Conference. The Lady Warriors came out firing and used a home run off the first batter and never looked back winning, 10-6.
Head Coach Missy Wheeler gave credit to the visiting team, "(Corban) did a great job putting the ball in play. We were not in sync offensively today. We had some kids step up and hit some homeruns but could not get enough runners on base."
With the win Corban improved to 2-10 in conference play and 5-27-1 overall.
Senior Meghan Henderson went 4-6 from the plate to lead the Mounties. Lydia Holm, Lindsey Smith and Terri Cisler each hit solo shots in the series.
Melodee Mildenberger got the win for EOU in game 1, Stephanie Baumann earned the save.
Eastern split the following day in two games with third in the conference, Concordia.
In game one, Concordia dodged a late rally and pulled out a 4-3 victory. Eastern had a chance in the sixth inning down one with the bases loaded, but were unable to capitalize and left the runners on.
Junior Lydia Holm collected all three RBI’s on two doubles and finished the day two for six.
Game two would finish in dramatic fashion, the score tied and bases loaded in the bottom of the final inning, sophomore Hannah Kirk was hit by a pitch, advancing the runner from third, winning the game 3-2.
When asked about Hannah Kirk's at bat that won the game for the Mounties, Head Coach Missy Wheeler said, "She really took one for the team. She got hit pretty good."
Junior Teri Cisler pitched all 7 innings for Eastern collecting the win.
Junior Centerfielder Michelle St. John and Senior Catcher Meghan Henderson each finished the day 4-7 for the Mountaineers.
The split brings EOU's record to 16-15 overall, 7-7 in the Cascade Conference.
Eastern returns to play Thursday evening against Walla Walla College, and Northwestern Christian College on Friday. Both games will be played at Pioneer Park, please come out and support your Mountaineers.
