3/7/07: On The Road With the Mounties

March 3, 2007

DAY TWO (Part I): Wednesday, March 7, 3:00 PM CST

Well we’re about 50 minutes from the tip-off of what the women have been working for all season, the national tournament. The team has been pretty quiet and seems very focused for the task at hand.
The day got going early again with a 7:15 wake-up, so I did get to sleep in an hour later than yesterday. I went along with Coach Weissenfluh to the Gateway Arena so I could pick up my media credentials. She had to get in line to pick a shooting time at a local gym by 8:00. Coach was hoping for an 11:00 time, and that’s just what she got, although it was in another state.
Sioux City sits on the border with Nebraska, and EOU drove 15 minutes to South Sioux City High School for their shoot-around. Eastern looked a little timid at times during the shooting and Coach Weissenfluh pulled them together at the end and had some great lines, “We’ve heard all about this team being the defending national champion, well we’re not playing that same team. We belong here, don’t let their records and the talk intimidate you.”
After that was finished the ladies were ready to play, all that stood between them and the game was about four hours and a trip to the team sponsor, Perkins Family Restaurant. We all ate very well, and folks, it’s time to play some ball!
