11/5/07: Monday With the Mounties

November 5, 2007

Well, it’s finally that weekend the athletic department has had circled for quite sometime, November 9-11. I’ll give you a quick rundown of the events beginning Friday.

Friday, November 9:
6:00- College of Idaho vs. Montana-Western (Men’s Basketball)
(7:00- Estacada High School at La Grande High School- 4A State Football Playoffs)
8:00- Montana Tech vs. Eastern Oregon (Men’s Basketball)
Saturday, November 10:
12:00- Montana State-Northern at Eastern Oregon (Football)
3:00- Northwest Christian vs. Eastern Oregon (Volleyball)
6:00- College of Idaho vs. Montana Tech (Men’s Basketball)
8:00- Montana-Western vs. Eastern Oregon (Men’s Basketball)
Sunday, November 11:
2:00- Yakima Valley CC at Eastern Oregon (Women’s Basketball)

So there you have it, eight games in 46 hours on the EOU campus. And, lucky for me, I will be covering all but the La Grande High School game.

I’d like to start by asking, where were all the trick-or-treaters last week? My girlfriend and I had two bowls full of candy, and we had a total of about 11 trick-or-treaters. But, as promised I went to “Saw IV.” It was even below what I thought it would be. I found myself watching the whole thing for the first time in the “Saw” epics, and it was just gore for no reason. Maybe if I would have actually watched the first ones, I would have noticed this. Besides, nothing beats Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin.

Basketball officially ahs arrived at Eastern Oregon University. The men completed a sweep of Montana, knocking off Montana Tech and Montana-Western. EOU showed their depth in both victories getting out early and closing both games. The women played very well against NCAA Division One opponents in Utah. Both games were losses, but both were exhibitions as well. Utah Valley State College was the first opponent and needed a second half run to space out the margin. Brigham Young University, who spent time in the top 25 last year, and is receiving votes this season, had some trouble with Eastern. The game got within 11 points many times in the second half, and finished as a 12 point win for the Cougars. BYU head coach, Jeff Judkins, said of EOU, “This team could be one of the best teams I’ve coached defensively.”

Football unfortunately fell again; this time to Montana Tech. EOU will close its season this Saturday on Senior Day at Community Stadium at noon against Montana State-Northern. James Mayfield, Riley Divens, Josh Geiger, and Michael Eby will have their final games in Mountaineer Blue and Gold. Please come out and support these phenomenal four seniors.

EOU cross country did very well for another weekend, this time on a very big stage, the Region 1 Championships. The women, behind Marcella Bosch’s seventh place finish, came in third place. The men used Zach Heath’s ninth place finish, to finish second overall. Now, all that’s left for the Harriers is the NAIA National Championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin on November 17th.

Volleyball split their road trip in Washington, knocking off Evergreen Friday, and falling in four games to Northwest, Saturday evening. EOU will travel to the College of Idaho Tuesday, and then close out the season on Saturday afternoon. There’s still a slim-chance for an at-large bid, so let’s hope for the best.
