11/1/07: Eastern Searching for Second Win

November 1, 2007

Bob Green will lead his Montana Tech Ore Diggers into La Grande’s Community Stadium Saturday in search for their fourth straight win. Tech is the hottest team behind Carroll College in the Frontier Conference.

The Ore Diggers also provide little stability in an unpredictable Frontier Conference this season. Besides first-place Carroll and last-place Eastern Oregon, the conference is up in the air in the middle. With two games left in the season, Tech holds a one-game lead over Montana State-Northern and Montana-Western. Rocky Mountain College sits one-game behind them.

The conference’s top four schools have been in-and-out the top 25 this season. Montana Tech is at its highest ranking of the season, 21, and looks to climb with a victory at Eastern Oregon.

The Mountaineers have had a tough season of their own. Despite their 1-8 conference record, in a league with such parody as the Frontier, EOU has been close in almost each game. Eastern’s lone victory came three weeks ago over number 21 at that time, Montana-Western 38-24.

EOU’s youth roster has been their highlight and downfall this season. The Mountaineers have committed 57 penalties this year, which is only fourth in the league, but the timing of the penalties is costly. Freshman quarterback, Bradley Padayao, is fifth in the Frontier Conference in total offense. Padayao has thrown for 505 yards and ran for 402 yards this season in eight games.

Last week Montana Tech edged Montana-Western, 28-21. Senior running back, Corey Warner ran for 171 yards on 38 carries. Tech rallied late in the game, outscoring Western 15-7 in the final quarter.

Eastern lost its second straight game last weekend at Rocky Mountain College, 17-21. RMC finished the day with 425 yards of offense, compared to EOU’s 285 yards. Ian O’Brien was the quarterback last weekend for the Mountaineers and finished with 177 yards in the air and 20 on the ground.

Things to watch for Saturday in La Grande, will EOU be able to stop Warner and the Tech ground attack after giving up 251 yards last week to Rocky Mountain. RMC came into the game last in the conference in rushing. Tech enters this weekend’s game third in the Frontier in rushing at 166 yards per game.

The Ore Diggers average just over 20 points per game and give up just over 17, compared to EOU’s 18.4 to 30 average a game.
