I’m back for another year sports fans. The purpose of this column to new readers is simply this, if you love sports being told in a humorous way; you’ll enjoy this.
What a summer in sports! Not really, unless you love seeing the Sports Center Top Ten dominated by baseball highlights and squirrels on water skis. Now I will say there were some highlights, so let’s touch on them, shall we?
Let’s begin in June, the Oregon State Beavers defended there national baseball title seemingly dominating their competition throughout the tournament. All I know is, I’d hate to be a North Carolina baseball fan. It seems like each year you’re playing for second place doesn’t it? Two straight years the Tarheels make the national championship only to go 1-4 against the Beavers in those two years!
Now, not a month later the University of Oregon announced the reinstatement of their baseball program. I’m sure this had nothing to do with just up I-5 OSU doing so well in baseball. I’m also positive as an Oregon fan that it was a complete coincidence that the U of O spoke with Pat Casey head coach of the Beavers to lead their new program. Completely coincidental people, it had to be.
July wasn’t highlighted by too much other than some guy won the Tour de France, but if he’s not American or didn’t take any enhancers to win it doesn’t matter in the media here.
In August the United States reclaimed their thrown on the basketball world. If there were any questions on how good this new bunch of players are… those questions are now gone. What an amazing group of athletes! I believe the average margin of victory was something like 45 points! The only thing that caught the fans eyes more in Las Vegas this summer was the Tommy Lee and Kid Rock fight. Did anyone else find it odd that they fought; meanwhile Pamela Anderson was there with some other guy?
The first day of September had huge news, now most big college football teams open against a fairly small school, saying this Michigan kept to tradition and scheduled Appalachian State. The Wolverines would later find out that this was maybe not the best selection. ASU went into the “Big House” and beat the nation’s fifth-ranked team! This win pretty much made fans forget the Boise State accomplishments a season ago, and gave high school football coaches new pre-game fuel to use.
Okay, so the summer did have some high points in sports, but with college football and the MLB playoffs heating up, it’s going to be a great fall!
