10/15/07: Monday With the Mounties

October 15, 2007

In the past week I have discovered the most awkward location a person can be in, an elevator. What happens to the human brain once it enters an elevator? I was getting into an elevator last week with two people, they were in mid-conversation outside the elevator while we waited; but once we got in, and it was dead silent for three floors.

I think this is why so many people fear elevators, not because it might drop, but they will be stuck in this tight area with people they may have to talk to. I understand it may not be other people’s business in conversations, but why talk outside the elevator and then go silent once you’re in?

Anyways, great homecoming week! EOU athletics were in full force over the weekend and came out very successful.

Congratulations to Eastern football, they won their first game Saturday! And, they did it in impressive fashion knocking off the 21st ranked Montana-Western Bulldogs, 38-24. EOU controlled the whole game, racking up 317 yards on the ground. The defense was dominant as well only giving up 88 yards in the air. 4th ranked Carroll comes into La Grande this Saturday, if the Saints run into the same team EOU played like last weekend, we will have another upset.

Eastern volleyball won their seventh straight game Saturday evening over Cascade College. EOU stayed at their number nine spot in Region 1 and will make the long road trip to Southern Oregon this weekend. Friday evening the Mountaineers will square-off with third in the region Southern Oregon and Saturday against sixth in the region Oregon Tech. SOU and O.I.T. sit at second and third in the Cascade Conference, right ahead of fourth place Eastern.

Cross country had a great weekend finishing first on the men’s side and second on the women’s at the EOU Open. The men dominated the 5k race placing seven runners in the top ten and Marcella Bosch finished second overall on the women’s side for the Mountaineers. The men kept their second place ranking in Region 1 and the women stayed at number five in the region. Both teams will look to move up the national rankings when they are released Wednesday.

Soccer faced tough competition on the road falling to Cascade and Concordia in Portland. The Mounties were leading Cascade all the way until the 68th minute when the Thunderbirds scored the equalizer and then struck again in the 81st minute. Saturday, EOU fell to 5th ranked in the nation, Concordia, 4-0. Soccer will close the season Wednesday at the College of Idaho.

Speaking of that, Albertson College of Idaho has officially dropped Albertson from their name. The decision came last Tuesday morning in Caldwell. I’m anxious to see if jerseys change at all.

Mountaineer basketball is back! After huge seasons last year, the men and women take the floor for the first time in the 2007-2008 season Saturday night in the annual alumni games. Tip-off for the women is set for 5:30 and the men at 7:30 in newly renovated Quinn Coliseum.

Well I found my new least favorite show on television, and it’s not even on HGTV. Dr. 90201 is awful. I know it was bad because I was eating my pizza from Dominoes, which is my favorite, and I just couldn’t eat due to the graphic nature of this show. But, that’s what a relationship’s all about, you have to give up that remote when it’s not college football. By the way congratulations to Beaver fans, who knocked off 2nd ranked California, making the Pac-Ten a mess for another year!
